70,000 Fire Prevention Books will be distributed to children in West Michigan, 23,500 into Grand Rapids Schools

To support Fire Prevention Month in October

October 24, 2007 (Grand Rapids, MI)

With help from the Grand Rapids Fire Department and other community partners, Rescue 1 Fire Safety for Kids will distribute 70,000 fire prevention books in West Michigan.  In Grand Rapids, every elementary school student K-6th grade received a fire prevention book, approximately 23,500 students.  The Gerald R. Ford Council received 5,000 to be given to the West Michigan Cub Scouts and 10,000 books will be going to the Kent County Red Cross.

The books for Fire Prevention Month were made possible through donations from Trigo Hospitality Pizza Huts owned by Joyce Lunsford and a F.E.M.A grant awarded to Rescue 1 Fire Safety for Kids.  This year, Trigo has donated over $28,000 for fire prevention in West Michigan through their fundraiser called “Fire Sale.”  Every time a “Fire Sale” purchase is made, $5.00 is donated to Rescue 1 Fire Safety for Kids for fire prevention.  Fund raising efforts are expected to reach over $50,000 by yearend.  Rescue 1 Fire Safety for Kids is dedicated to educating children about fire prevention and fire safety.

Since receiving non-profit 501C-3 status in 2002, Rescue 1 Fire Safety for Kids, supported by corporate sponsors and grants, has increased fire prevention awareness to the next level.  Rescue 1 Fire Safety for Kids has provided fire departments, schools, and parents a variety of educational tools, at no cost, to help decrease the number of fires that result in a child’s death or injury.

The fire prevention activity books and website educate children and parents on smoke alarm safety, kitchen safety, home escape plans and carbon monoxide poisoning through coloring pictures, fun quizzes, games, and videos.
